If Numbers Could Talk
What Was It?
What if numbers had a mind of their own. Anyone who has ever taken a math class will admit that numbers can make you feel like a million bucks, or like you want to cry a million tears. In this project, we will personify (give human qualities, traits, or form) imaginary, real, complex, rational, irrational, whole, and integer numbers in order to investigate them more deeply. We will see that numbers can get slightly irrational, have lots of power, blow our minds, and get extremely complex. Using our mathematical knowledge and imaginations each of us worked with a group of four to create a story experimenting the possibilities of these numbers mating or interacting.
Who Were We?
In our group we had Parth Rabadia (P-Money), Dylan Gardener (D-Dog), Cecilia Zhao (C-Cat), and Serina Chavez (Sassy-S). We all came up with gangster names for ourselves because we are cool and we are friends and you can't have a good group without special gangster names.
What Did We Do?
All of us in the group decided in the beginning that we wanted to be creative and different from other people, therefore, we decided to use the characters in a video game to represent different numbers, and their fights and the result will be what will happen when they meet each other. However, later we realized that it was so complicated for us to do it this way. We would have had to spend a LOT OF time figuring out which character represents which number and why, how the numbers are going to show the result through the video game, how we could get together to play it, and how we are going to record the game and explain the math! Therefore, we came up with another whole new idea, a whole new story in two days!! We had this great idea to create popsicle stick puppets and use them in our video. We wrote a great hero/villain story where each interaction is built around battles. It took a while to put it all together but, in the end, we got it done and the final product looked great! In this project, Each of us participated almost equally in creating the story, figuring out the mathematics, making the puppets, filming, and editing the final video.
