Calculicious Closing Time: Topic Takedown
In this project, we, as students, have been given the unique opportunity to take our education into our own hands. Using Khan Academy, we will choose and explore individual topics which fascinate us is an effort to create meaningful individual study habits and develop a drive for mathematics. In the end, we will be tasked with creating visual pieces inspired by the topic we have selected to study and by the work of the wonderful Vi Hart. Additionally, this project has been designed to give us, as seniors, one last chance to engage in rigorous mathematics and share it with our classmates.
Essential Questions
- What topics may be helpful in preparing us for college?
- How can we display challenging mathematics in a way that is approachable and displays its beauty?
- How can we be inspired by unique current mathematicians?
- What are strategies to develop your own successful individual study skills for the future?
- What can we create to support other math students to be successful?
Topic Takedown: Sequences and Series
For my individual Topic Takedown, I have decided to study basic Sequences and Series. In essence, Sequences and Series are a branch of pre-calculus that deal with ordered lists of objects which often have some sort of pattern to them. By studying this topic, I hope to gain a foundation in math that can then lead to the study of the Fibonacci spiral. As an artist, the Fibonacci spiral has always fascinated me because of its connection with The Golden Ratio or, the Rule or Thirds which is a huge concept in artistic composition. However, I have never understood why. I hope, in this study, to gain this understanding and make the connection between art and mathematics.
