FRANKENSTEIN! - Graphic Work and Posters
This quarter semester our whole team has been studying Frankenstein and monsters in various ways that include all out subjects. In our art STEAM class though, we are making posters.
Brainstorm
To start our project off, out teacher had us search (on Google images) for movie posters or other graphic work to get an idea of what they're like and so we could study them. He had us place all the posters that "spoke to us" onto a document. Doing this was pretty fun and I found some pretty interesting posters. These are uploaded below.
The day after doing this, we were taught by our teacher a little about the basics of graphic work and poster making (ex: what works and what doesn't). Soon after, the project was launched!
As the project was being launched I, of course, was flowing with ideas right away! I started to sketch them out...Here are photos of my beginning ideas:

The Idea
So, I spent some time with these ideas and worked with them a little so they could be as great as my expectations. When my flow of ideas was gone, I decided to take the teacher's advice and study the movie posters I had found for ideas and techniques.
THEN, Suddenly! I had my idea! I saw this poster:
THEN, Suddenly! I had my idea! I saw this poster:
And I was like ""Oh! What a great idea! What a great poster! A SILHOUETTE!". And wham! My idea was born. Immediately it started to form in my mind. I drew this:
I would have a silhouette of the creature filled with something off to the right-ish side of the paper and the title to the left. All of this on a white background (because white backgrounds are cool). I set this aside and grabbed a computer immediately to start creating the image on Photoshop. I spent some time finding the "right" picture of the creature to edit and, it was then, that I thought it'd be cool if the lookers of the poster could not decide whether the silhouette was of a human (mad scientist) or monster (creature). It would maybe reveal the theme a little. So, through compiling images together, I created this:
Yaay! I thought it looked pretty cool and poster-worthy! But, the poster still felt a little empty of meaning for me. So, I thought about it a little...And then, somehow, I had my next big idea!
What if I create two posters?!
One, would have an empty silhouette
And the other would have the same silhouette but filled with images that describe the show!
The two posters will be able to stand alone but will also correlate!
Yep! I'm a genius. So, with my idea, I continued on. I went around to some friends and my teacher and showed them the silhouette I created and explained my idea for feedback. Many loved my idea of the silhouette but when they saw it, they were not quote sure whether I should use it. Then, looking at it, I became convinced as well that maybe it wasn't the image to use. It seemed a little unclear (as in the meaning) and, it was hard to cut out for the empty silhouette poster (which I tried).

I decided I'd try to go for something simpler. Not being sure quite what to do yet, I looked at posters online some more and sketched out some new ideas for the silhouette based off of posters I saw and liked until I had created one I liked. These are shown below:
After creating the last silhouette, I immediately got to work transferring the image to a bigger paper where I could work on the rest of the poster. This, I did, and, after looking online for a little I found and copied a font for the title. Below is the image:
I then scanned the image onto a computer and edited it slightly (added a scar) so it would look crisp and neat. When I had just finished this, I was informed that the name of our play was not longer "Frankenstein" but was "Frank N' Stein", That meant that I needed to change the title. This I did simply and easily and moved on.
I then decided I needed to create the design for the other poster. I already had a slight idea for what I wanted which was a hill with the silhouette of a man (Victor) walking and maybe some lightning. So, I printed out the poster and started to draw the image in. After some hours of difficulty, I drew the following:
